About Artist
Olivia Lake was born on Salt Spring Island, in B.C. .
This is where she attended Elementary School and discovered her love for the Arts and Crafts, Writing and Cooking.
Olivia was raised by two Artisans - her Mom (Goldsmith/Horse Trainer) and her Dad (Carpenter/Custom Residential Designer/Architectural Drafter). Also growing up close to Robert Bateman (Wildlife Artist/Naturalist) and being encouraged to continue her sketching by Holly Carr (Silk Painter/Artist/Entertainer), was both inspirational and influential.
Olivia continued to pursue and practice her talents throughout High School. She graduated with awards and honors in Art and several other subjects.
During these years she attended the Bragg Creek Artisans Sale, where she sold and presented her beaded jewelry, embroidered bracelets, pillows, hand painted silk scarves etc.
Olivia graduated from South Puget Sound Community College with her Architectural Drafting and Design Certificate. She explored this line of work for several years, during which she received her Photography Diploma, studied TESL and volunteered at Centro de Estudios de Ingles Kennedy Sc. in Queretaro Mexico, teaching English through Art.
She still pursues her creative talents where she feels most at home - British Columbia, where she lives with her son and partner.
Artist Statement
I have enjoyed (since a very young age) working with my hands, expressing my feelings and emotions through poetry and art.
I have a love and appreciation for nature and people and this is represented in the subject matter I choose to photograph and use as reference for the majority of my paintings. I like the versatility of acrylic paints and enjoy using ink and water color together for quick illustrations. I find color and contrast important components of my works. Also being raised by two Artisans, taught me to be resourceful, attentive to details, quality and composition.
When painting, I enjoy being able to capture the mood or spirit of a moment. When completing works I have a sense of closure when finished and know when the work is done because I will look at it and feel a silence and it will look complete to me.
